Have you ever masturbated? New RTÉ survey wants to know all about young Irish adults

The survey asks a range of questions from the political to the personal.

HAVE YOU EVER smoked a joint with your parents? Have you ever had a threesome? How often do you watch porn? Does everyone have equal education opportunities?

These are some of the questions contained in a new online survey being delivered by RTÉ in partnership with 11 other EU countries.

The survey is a joint effort by the European Broadcasting Union to to try to get a better picture of the habits and mindsets of 18 to 34-year-olds in Europe, what the survey organisers are calling generation Y.

The survey and project is called Generation What?, and consists of 149 questions that fall into five broad categories:

  • Family (parents, siblings, couples, children)
  • Peers (friends, their generation, youth in general)
  • Self (the body, sexuality, self-image, feelings)
  • Society (institutions, values, work, workplace)
  • The future (for self, for children, dreams, fears)

You enter your age, post code, gender, education and job description and as the questions progress you can get live updates on how other people within these categories are answering. For example:

After you have completed the provisional results of the survey, you can check out the percentages of what answers other people chose.

The questions

The questions can range from politically vague queries about Europe to deeply personal ones about sexuality, relationships and beliefs.

Survey Q happy life

They range from simple agree/disagree answers towards answers on scale and multiple options.

Other questions are very specific:

Across the range of questions, samples include:

  • Do you have friends in Europe?
  • Have you ever had sex with someone of the same sex?
  • Do you feel fulfilled in your job?
  • Do you think there’s a European national identity?
  • Have you ever masturbated?

The point of all this

So after the surveys have been taken and the results are in, RTÉ says that it will use the data to “help build a coherent and reliable ensemble of material” that will form the basis of two television documentaries to be broadcast in late-2016.

The purpose is to see what makes young people in Ireland tick and how they relate with the rest of the EU, in order for RTÉ to deliver a “detailed and revelatory perspective on how young Irish people live their lives today”.
