THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE attended vigils and protests last night to demonstrate in memory of Savita Halappanavar.
The demonatrations came following news that the 31-year-old died at University College Hospital in Galway last month from from septicaemia contracted during her miscarriage, having been refused a termination.
In Dublin, around two thousand people are said to have attended a demonstration, organised by the pro-choice campaign, outside Leinster House.
During the event, attendees sat down on the street and observed silence in Savita’s memory.

In Cork, some 400 people held a candlelit vigil for the woman with many people bearing placards calling for the government to make a change in legislation to prevent future deaths like Savita’s.
A small vigil also took place in Limerick with signs asking people to “Remember Savita” and a minute of silence was held for the woman.
It is expected further demonstrations will take place in Belfast and at the weekend in Galway.
The demonstration organisers in Dublin have also called for pickets at Irish embassies across Europe next Wednesday. A demonstration outside the Irish embassy in London was held in conjunction with yesterday evening’s events.
