Seven people arrested for trying to recruit women and girls for jihadist groups

Four of the seven arrested are female, one of whom is a minor.

SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE been arrested in Spain and Morocco this morning as part of an operation to combat terrorism.

Four women, one of whom is a minor, and a man were arrested in Barcelona at around 6.45am this morning.

Another three men were arrested in Spain’s North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla and in the Moroccan town of Castillejos.

All of those arrested stand accused of being part of a network that attracts, recruits and sends women to join Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

The arrests were made in a joint effort between Spanish and Moroccan security forces. Six houses were searched in the course of making the arrests.

The operation remains open.

The recruitment campaign targeting younger women and adolescent girls has been quite successful for jihadist groups with a number of high-profile cases reported.
