This afternoon in the city centre I saw five Gardaí in one area on the beat. Gardaí can’t be everywhere.

There are certainly less and have been for some time. E.g. O’Connell Street, any time of the day or night, is an absolute disgrace!

Maybe give the Gardaí a bit of leeway with regard to a grey area around assault of known criminals.

Andy, I presume you didn’t give that suggestion much thought seeing as any individual who receives a warning/fine or worse from a member of an garda siochana is breaking the law of the land. So what you’re suggesting is that our own police force become lawless, a rogue band of peace keepers… because of course this will make everyone feel sooo safe! The only way to deal with criminals is to teach them a hard lesson. Locking them up is simply not enough, forced manual labour is an absolute must. Build roads for their 1 euro a day wage…clean the streets of Dublin at night under heavily armed guards, if they try to run… less mouths to feed but it’s under their terms, so ultimately the law is upheld. Make them work their jail time, and don’t make it easy on them. Negative actions should carry with them hard consequences… no personal tvs, mirrors, etc… It should be as hard as possible to knock the fight out of them.

So every young person should have to do this? Even if they’re brought up properly? A minority of teenagers don’t have their heads screwed on properly, so not every teenager should be looked at in that way..

I agree with your comments Damien, but it’s a bit late to say “at some point some point they will become so arrogant that they will put it up to anyone” – Let’s not forget what the they did to Veronica Guerin, an innocent woman gunned down in broad daylight or any of the other innocent victims that have lost their lives at the hands of the drug gangs in just the last few years – Anthony Campbell, Baiba Saulite, Donna Cleary, Roy Collins, Shane Geoghegan and probably many more.

No point in arming Gardaí unless you’re ready for them to shoot people.

@ Robert – if you see illegal activity why don’t you report it? It is a fact that a “bulb out” or 5 over limit is illegal so do you expect to be allowed break the law? If you think squad cars are unroadworthy write to Alan Shatter and your TD and never mind swiping at the Gardaí.

Robert replace the bulb and stay within the speed limit. No problems No courts No Fines. Problem solved.
