1. #OPINION POLL: The two main opposition parties have continued to gain ground in the opinion polls, according to the latest one published in this morning’s Irish Times. While Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin both gain ground, the Ipsos MRBI poll also shows that Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams is now the most popular party leader, one point ahead of Fine Gael’s Enda Kenny.
2. #BLOXHAM: The Central Bank has ordered one of the country’s best-known stockbrokers to cease all regulated trading activities immediately, after the company’s management informed it of financial irregularities last week. The bank has transferred all client and fund management business to Davy.
3. #ROADS: Gardaí are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding yesterday’s fatal accident at the Cavan Stages rally, in which two people were killed. A local councillor this morning said a third person remained in intensive care after the crash.
4. #JOBSWATCH: A shopping website is to create 40 new jobs over the next 12 months. BuyersClub.ie helps small Irish producers to sell products like food, crafts, clothes and jewellery online.
5. #EMERGENCY WARDS: The association representing doctors in Ireland’s emergency wards has sought a firm commitment to end the overcrowding in Ireland’s emergency wards once and for all. The IAEM says Tallaght effectively fixed its overcrowding issues within 72 hours, and wants similar measures adopted nationwide.
6. #SYRIA: The United Nations’ Security Council has passed a statement condemning the Syrian government for last Friday’s slaughter in Houda, in which 109 people – including 32 children – were killed. The council condemned the killings “in the strongest possible terms” and demanded that Syria pull backs its troops from heavily populated centres.
7. #LEVESON: It’s going to be another big day at the Leveson Inquiry in London, as former prime minister Tony Blair takes the stand to discuss his relationship with the press while the leader of the Labour party.
8. #BONDWATCH: AIB will today repay a €2.25 billion bond taken out by the bank before it fell into public ownership. The bond is covered under the State banking guarantee.
9. #SUSPECT: They say girls love a bad boy – in which case, Justin Bieber is about to get even more popular. The singer is wanted for questioning by the Los Angeles county sheriff, after a paparazzo claimed he had been injured in a scuffle with the singer as he tried to photograph Bieber and his girlfriend, actress Selena Gomez, at a theatre.
