1. #MAHON: The Mahon Tribunal has issued an “unreserved apology” to Conor Haughey, son of the late Charles Haughey, for mistaking him for his brother Ciarán in its final report. The Dáil resumes it’s debate on the Mahon report findings today. If you missed it yesterday, here’s what happened in the first of its three days of debate.
2. #SYRIA: The Syrian government has agreed to adopt a six-point plan developed by UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. Annan called on Syria to immediately start putting the plan into action to express its commitment. Meanwhile, the UN’s human rights chief Navi Pillay has told the BBC that Syrian authorities has deliberately targeted children.
3. #EXPENSES: Details of judges’ expenses for 2011 show that judicial costs have fallen by a third over the past four years, while court business has increased by 40 per cent.
4. #GAME: Employees of the Game chain of computer stores are staging sit-ins at a number of branches over issues regarding their redundancy pay and the company’s failure to provide any notice period for the cuts. The jobs are being cut on Friday as Game closes its stores in the UK and Ireland.
5. #ROADS: One man has died and three people are injured after two cars collided shortly after midnight near Slane, Co Meath.
6. #STRIKES: A general strike planned by Spanish workers tomorrow could seriously disrupt flights to and from Spain. The strike is in reaction to government moves to make it less expensive to fire workers and to cut wages, according to the AFP. Spain’s unemployment is around 23 per cent and a recent Bank of Spain report said that the country is back in recession.
7. #SHATTER: Sinn Féin’s Jonathan O’Brien has lodged an official complaint with the Ceann Comphairle after Minister for Justice Alan Shatter dismissed dozens of questions submitted by the TD.
8. #INVISIBILITY: Are scientists on the brink of developing an invisibility cloak? Researchers are working on redirecting heat using specially developed electronics to hide objects from thermal-imaging systems, the BBC reports.
9. #LANDING: A domestic US flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Texas after the plane’s captain started shouting about bombs. The JetBlue pilot locked him out of the cockpit and passengers said that the pilot then called out over the announcement system for someone to restrain the captain.
