Waterford IT chartered €4,200 flight for one person

College spent €134,000 on fine art, €18,400 on flowers and used taxis for round trips between Dublin and Waterford says report.

WATERFORD INSITUTE OF Technology chartered a flight for one person from Waterford to Dublin at a cost of €4,200, according to a report into spending between 2004 and 2011 at the third level college.

The Deloitte and Touche report, which was obtained by thestory.ie under the freedom of information act,  details how the Office of the President spent €134,000 on fine art, €18,400 on flowers and used taxis for round trips between Dublin and Waterford. Prof Kieran Byrne, the president of the college, defended the practice of using taxis for times “when work needed to be done in a discreet environment when travelling”.

But the report says it considers the taxi expenditure is “potentially in breach of the travel policy which requires that such spending is only used when public transport is not available”.

Prof Byrne did not seek formal pre-approval for the travel expenses, as required under the institues travel policy. “He also stated that the taxi was not solely for his own use but was made available to other staff. We have been unable to verify this . . . as the invoices do not contain sufficient detail on the purpose of the journey or the people involved.”

The Union of Students in Ireland said the expenses scandal at WIT highlighted a pattern of “waste and excessive spending in the third level sector” and was not an isolated incident in the third level sector.

“The report on spending in WIT should be shocking to all who read it. However, USI has known for a long time that the findings of the report reflect a pattern of wasteful spending throughout the third level sector” said USI  President John Logue.

A recent report on spending stated that in 2011 Ireland’s universities spent over €1million on room hire and €377,000 on taxis. UCC alone spent €138,000 on taxis for staff during that 12 month period, while Trinity spent €550,000 on room hire, it said.

Prof Byrne, who was on a salary of €156,000 a year, was removed from his position of president at the end of his 10 year term. The move came about after the intervention of the Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn and Tom Boland, the chief executive of the Higher Education Authority. He retired on a full pension, but signalled his intention to challenge his removal as president.

He was previously critcised for spending in other areas, including €157,050 on an office and boardroom with two individual kitchenettes.

  • Apparently he spent a huge sum kitting out an office for himself at the WIT Carriganore campus when his office was at the main campus, miles from Carriganore. Disgraceful waste of money and his reign at WIT really reminds me of that of former Ceann Comhairle John O’Donoghue. Disgusting egocentric individual who used his expense account at WIT to fund a lavish lifestyle of excess. Ok, rant about my alma mater over.

  • Reading the report would make your blood boil , an unbelievable disgrace , these guys should be made accountable for the excessive waste of money , fine art , chartered planes , excessive taxi use , that the system allows these people walk away will full pensions is something that needs to be challenged , the country seriously heeds some accountability , this is the equivalent of corruption and theft , this is white collar crime , it’s good there’s reports to highlight this stuff but a serious look at the law and holding people to account for failure to carry out the job they are handsomely paid to do , thais guy should not be getting paid state pensions rewarding this gross mismanagement , read the report m any sensible person can see this is gross excessive shameful waste of money instead of spending on quality education for the students at the institute,…..shameful …..

  • I got my degree in WIT while this guy was at the wheel. We had a number of crucial subjects cut from our syllabus, where the college cited ‘lack of funds’. Meanwhile, this chancer was kitting out his office, getting taxis like nobody’s business and paying for pointless first class flights.

I don’t want to condemn WIT as a whole, because I had some very good lecturers who were keen about their fields and passionate about lecturing. But there were also many lecturers who were underqualified, and possessed zero knowledge about topics they were supposed to be lecturing.

When it got to our final year, a number of students in my class wanted to quit (and rightly so) because one of the most important subjects for them was cut all due to lack of funds. This guy should be put in prison. I feel very strongly about it.

I just feel sorry for the students, and the lecturers out there who work hard to make the most of the college. But WIT should NEVER become a University until they can sort out these absurd flaws in the system.

  • 6 businesses a day failing because of high cost of doing business. Yet WIT ( and how many more) wasting public money in this fashion. There must be sanctions somewhere. Stop their pensions immediately and let them spend the next five years in court arguing about it.

  • Ha, it sounds like an Africa dictator building luxurious palaces for himself.

It amazes me how people in these positions can justify their actions. Just like everyone in charge in this country, they live on another planet.

  • Studied at WIT for 3 years. Badly organised, terrible staff, terrible lecturers (one or two good ones) and useless student’s union.nnStudy in the UK now, whose 3rd level education system is in another league. In regards to fees, you get what you pay for.

  • This should kill off any talk about a University of the South-East.

Where were the rest of the governing body when Byrne was spending money like a drunken sailor? Too much to hope they will be named and shamed also?

  • A lot of comments here seem to begin with I heard or rumor had it, people should only speak about facts and not make personal attacks on anyone.
I went to WIT for 5 years beginning 2001 and received an excellent education which has enabled me to have work since.
I don’t know what money was or was not apparently spent during my time there but I do know facilities in WIT were excellent and were continuously improving
