Woman drove around with dead body in car for up to 10 months

Police in California investigating the discovery of a mummified body in a car.

POLICE IN CALIFORNIA who responded to a call about an illegally parked vehicle, discovered a dead body in the car.

The body, which was mummified, was in the car for a number of months before being found by police, the Orange County Register reports.

Sgt Ed Everett said they were initially unable to decipher whether it was a male or female, and that the skin was darkened and leathery.

The car owner told authorities that she had befriended a homeless woman and allowed her to sleep in her car last December. However, when she found the woman had died, she was afraid to report it to police and continued to drive around with the body in the passenger seat of the car.

The OC Register reports that the driver had left a box of baking soda in the car in an attempt to tackle the odour arising from the corpse. She covered the body with clothes, and continued to drive the vehicle.

Police are trying to establish the exact cause and time of death, but say the woman may have died anywhere between three and 10 months ago. They have yet to identify the body.
