Man arrested on suspicion of rape in Belfast last night

The incident occurred in the University Street area of south Belfast.

DETECTIVES IN THE North have arrested a man on suspicion of the rape of a young woman in south Belfast last night.

In the University Street area at around 12.40am, the woman in her 20s reported being assaulted in the doorway of a commercial premises.

The PSNI referred to the incident as a “serious sexual assault”.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in custody this evening.

University Street is near the grounds of Queen’s University Belfast, and Belfast City Hospital.

Detective Inspector Zoe McKee issued an appeal for anyone who is in the area of University Street at the time the incident took place to contact police at Ladas Drive, quoting reference number 19 7/3/17.
