LAST UPDATE | 4 Aug

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Campaign Season

1. In today’s morning lead, Political Editor Christina Finn reports that presidential hopeful Catherine Connolly is using a grassroots fundraising campaign, similar to ones often used in America, to help build support and raise money.

The approach is in the absence of clear commitments from the parties that are backing her to provide cash for her campaign.

Gaelige

2. Just nine textbooks have been fully translated into Irish for Leaving Certificate students at Gaelcholáistí, who are relying on teachers to provide accurate notes and interpret chapters in real-time.

Gaelscoil students studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics will still not have the translated books until the end of next year, despite an additional €3m being spent this year to beef up the resources for the agency tasked with translating the books.

Hilary Weston

3. Tánaiste Simon Harris has been among those to pay tribute to Irish-Canadian businesswoman Hilary Weston, who died yesterday at the age of 83.

Weston, a former fashion model, was a prolific businesswoman and philanthropist. She played a pivotal role in the development of both Penneys and Brown Thomas, two of Ireland’s most iconic and recognisable retail brands.

New to the Dáil

4. In our series on new TDs’ experiences in their first term in the Dáil, today we hear from Fine Gael’s James Geoghegan.

The Dublin Bay South TD was first elected as a councillor in 2019.

Elected to the Dáil for the first time in last year’s general election, Geoghegan tells us that despite his prior experience, the role of a TD is, in some ways, pretty different to what he thought it would be.

Chile

5. The bodies of all five miners trapped for three days in a collapsed shaft in the world’s biggest underground copper mine have been found and identified, an official said.

Aquiles Cubillos, the lead prosecutor in Chile’s O’Higgins region, said the body of Moises Pavez, the last miner to remain missing, was found at 3:30pm local time by rescue teams.

Wembley Stadium

6. A man yesterday died after falling during an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium.

In a statement the Metropolitan Police said: “A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.”

Storm Floris

7. Thousands of customers have been left without electricity as Storm Floris batters coastal areas.

Weather warnings came into place for a number of counties in the north and west of the country overnight. All are due to lift by mid-afternoon

Hurdles

8. Sarah Lavin made history at the National Senior Championships yesterday as she became the most decorated female hurdler in the history of these championships.

Lavin surged to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles final, clocking 12.92 to claim her 10th national senior title on the track. Molly Scott took silver in a time of 13.61 while Sarah Quinn ran 13.84 to clinch bronze.

Australia

9. Bundee Aki has revealed he missed the birth of his fifth child to play in the British and Irish Lions’ first Test against Australia.

Aki completed 23 minutes as a replacement against the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium on July 19 just hours after his wife Kayla had given birth to Aine in their native New Zealand.
