1. #YOUNG OFFENDERS: Children’s Court judge Ann Ryan has called for Minister Frances Fitzgerald and the head of the Irish Youth Justice Service to come before a court today to account for the lack of detention places for young offenders. Figures obtained by RTÉ show that the court has been unable to detain children charged or convicted of crimes in at least 18 separate cases over the last three weeks.
2. #ARRESTS: A man in his 20s and a woman in her 50s have been arrested this morning in Co Kerry in connection with the murder of James Cahillane in April last year. Cahillane’s body was found by the fire service responding to a fire at his home but a post mortem later revealed injuries consistent with an assault.
3. #NURSES: Health Minister James Reilly will face nurses and midwives at their union’s conference today in Donegal. The INMO will present Reilly with the findings of their trolley watch and newly launched ward watch survey which show an increase in the number of people on trolleys and in wards since 2007.
4. #CROKE PARK 2: Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin has indicated that the government will fail in its efforts to reach a revised pay deal for public sector workers. In an interview with TheJournal.ie, Howlin said any deal would require a major shift in policy and admitted an all-encompassing deal is unlikely.
5. #TRAGEDY: The HSE is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a toddler in Cork this week after his parents were told to bring him to the hospital themselves. The three-year-old fell from a top-storey window at his home and his parents were told that no ambulance was available for him, the Irish Examiner reports.
6. #SUGAR DADDY: Over 4,000 Irish students have joined a ‘sugar daddy’ dating service in order to help pay for college, the Irish Independent reports. The US-based website arranges “mutually beneficial relationships” between ‘Sugar Babies’ and wealthy – and mainly older – men who offer gifts and financial help.
7. #BANGLADESH: The death toll in Bangladesh’s worst industrial accident ever has passed 1,000 as rescue teams sort through the rubble of a collapsed factory near Dhaka. Authorities say around 2,500 people have been injured in the incident and a total of 1,021 bodies have been recovered.
8. #OHIO: A US prosecutor has said he will seek to press charges that carry the death penalty against the man accused of kidnapping and raping three Ohio women over the course of a decade. Though Ariel Castro has already been charged on these two counts, prosecutor Timothy McGinty said investigators will now go back over the many torments inflicted on the women with the aim of bringing more serious charges against him.
9. #HARPOON: A woman has miraculously survived after her husband accidentally shot her in the mouth with a harpoon in Brazil. The woman’s husband was cleaning his spear gun when it went off, firing a harpoon that hit her cervical spine.
