The 9 at 9 Here are nine things you need to know on this bank holiday Monday…

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #RUN: Dublin and Cork will see tens of thousands of people hitting the streets in runners and sweatbands today for the City Marathon and the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon, RTÉ reports. If you’re out driving in Cork from 9am or in Dublin from 2pm, expect traffic restrictions.

2. #LABOUR PAINS: Minister Pat Rabbitte has expressed his frustration at Labour taking all of the blame for the performance of the government. In an interview with TheJournal.ie, Rabbitte said the party’s own representatives were satisfied with their work in government, saying they had recorded “a number of important achievements”.

3. #RAPIST: Gardaí are in the middle of an undercover operation targeting a dangerous rapist living in Dublin, The Herald reports. Undercover female gardaí are posing as sex workers in order to catch the man who is suspected in over a dozen rapes.

4. #CHILDCARE: Minister Frances Fitzgerald has said that the next budget will not include a second year of free pre-school. She told the Irish Daily Mail that, while she wants to see this introduced, some “building blocks” like an increase in required qualifications for staff and implementing a more robust inspection system must be put in place first.

5. #TURKEY: In the third night of clashes between demonstrators and police, tear gas and water cannons were fired at protesters in Istanbul, AFP reports. Interior Minister Muammer Guler said earlier that more than 1,700 people had been arrested in the unrest nationwide, though most have since been released.

6. #PREDATORS: Sexual predators targeting children online have begun using more aggressive tactics and offenders are paying as much as €900 for new child abuse imagery, the Irish Examiner reports. A Europol report also found that law enforcement agencies are struggling to address the problem because of a lack of staff and resources.

7. #LONDON: The two men suspected of hacking a soldier in London to death will appear at separate courts today, AFP reports. The pair who were filmed and photographed at the scene by witnesses, were both shot by police but later released from hospital.

8. #CHINA: A deadly fire that broke out in a poultry plant in China has killed at least 93 people, Reuters reports. It is reported that there were a number of explosions in an electrical system in the slaughterhouse and a number of workers are thought to be still trapped inside.

9. #EAT YOUR GREENS: Broccoli has been found be effective in fighting prostate cancer, according to the Irish Sun. A new study found that a number of superfoods, like pomegranates, green tea and tumeric, were also effective with trials showing lower levels of cancer protein for those consuming the foods.
