The 9 at 9 Attacks against Ukrainians in Tipperary, cigarettes banned from vending machines and how much Áras hopefuls are spending on social media ads.

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

Tipperary

1. In our main story this morning, Eoghan Dalton reports that Ukrainian families who recently moved into an estate in Clonmel, Co Tipperary have said they are in fear for their safety after a series of attacks and threats against them in recent weeks.

In one incident, a car had its windows smashed and was set alight by a group of youths.

Banned

2. From Monday, cigarettes, tobacco and vapes will be banned from self-service and vending machines in Ireland.

The machines are often found in pubs and nightclubs, but the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland said their use has been decreasing in recent years.

Race for the Áras

3. Ireland’s three presidential hopefuls have spent thousands of Euro on social media ads in recent weeks – but one candidate has spent four times more on their ads than their rivals combined.

UN

4. Iran is set to come under sweeping UN sanctions for the first time in a decade over its nuclear programme after nuclear talks with the West at this week’s General Assembly floundered.

Analysis

5. Reporting from New York, our Political Editor Christina Finn writes that if a week of high-level engagement between the world’s most powerful leaders results in no concrete actions being taken to stop what is happening in Gaza, then the UN and other international bodies can’t complain if they are demoted to ‘talking shop’ status

Vaping

6. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he would like to see the HSE-funded smoking cessation service expanded to those who need help to quit vaping.

Gaza

7. The medical charity Doctors without Borders (MSF) said it has been forced to suspend its work in Gaza City as hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee due to Israeli attacks.

Ryder Cup

8. Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood struck twice as Europe stormed into a three-point lead on the opening day of the Ryder Cup on Friday.

Pittsburgh Steelers

9. Ahead of tomorrow’s NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, one reporter who posted two photos to X – one of him in Dublin 28 years ago and one taken this week – has gone viral
