Higher rents

1. Rent prices are now two-thirds higher than at the peak of the Celtic Tiger in 2007, according to a report by Daft.ie.

The report found that in the 12 months to September rents have risen by 4.3% while supply has decreased.

Presidential diary

2. It’s a busy day ahead for President Catherine Connolly, who will spend her first full day in office travelling across the country for a number of engagements.

Connolly will begin her morning with a visit to a gaelscoil in Dublin, and will then travel to a family resource centre in Meath and a hospital in Galway.

New housing plan

3. The government’s long-awaited new housing plan is due to be signed off today.

It’s heading to Cabinet for approval later with the full details to be launched tomorrow.

Turkish plane crash

4. Turkish officials have said all 20 people onboard a military cargo plane that crashed in Georgia on its return from Azerbaijan yesterday have died.

The plane had taken off from Ganja airport in western Azerbaijan on Tuesday afternoon, but crashed shortly after crossing the border into eastern Georgia.

McGrath backs Martin

5. EU Commissioner Michael McGrath has given Micheál Martin his full-throated backing to stay on as leader of Fianna Fáil, insisting he fully expects his former constituency rival to remain as Taoiseach throughout Ireland’s presidency of the EU in the second half of next year – and beyond.

Trump vs BBC

6. US President Donald Trump said the BBC “defrauded the public” and that he had an “obligation” to take legal action over the editing of a speech.

BBC Director-general Tim Davie quit on Sunday amid a scandal over the editing of a speech by Trump before the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.

Ryanair boarding passes

7. Ryanair has officially moved to 100% digital boarding passes today.

Passengers are no longer able to download and print a physical paper boarding pass - they instead need to use to the digital boarding pass generated in their Ryanair app during online check-in to board their Ryanair flight.

New census

8. The government will today sign off on a proposal to conduct the next Census on Sunday, 9 May 2027. 

Retail crime charges

9. Gardaí have charged 29 people as part of a major clampdown on retail crime in the Dublin 7 area.

The charges come under Operation Táirge, an ongoing garda investigation into theft, handling stolen goods, criminal damage and assaults on shop staff in the north inner city.
