THE MAN IN CHARGE of iPhone engineering has left Apple weeks after the ‘Antennagate’ controversy broke. The company has not provide a reason behind Mark Papermaster’s departure, but confirmed yesterday that he and the company had parted ways.
Issues surrounding the iPhone 4′s reception quality emerged just days after the device was launched in June. When questioned about it, Apple CEO Steve Jobs suggested people should hold the device differently, before later announcing customers would be given free covers to prevent the problem.
Papermaster left IBM to work for Apple in 2008, prompting IBM to sue him for breach of contract. The company said he had a greed not to work for a competitor for 12 months after his departure. A court initially barred him from working for Apple, but the case was resolved within six months and he began working for Apple in April 2009.
The latest iPhone model continues to cause trouble for Apple. The company is having problems producing the white version of the device, which will now not be available until later this year. Gizmodo recently reported that iPhones are susceptible to hackers who can take control of the device remotely.
