Woman arrested in connection with sharing ‘graphic image’ from scene of fatal collision in Newry

A 67-year-old pedestrian was killed in the collision in Newry on 8 October.

A WOMAN HAS been arrested in connection with the sharing of a graphic image from the scene of a fatal collision in Co Down.

PSNI officers in Newry yesterday arrested a 47-year-old woman on suspicion of misuse of a public electronic network to send a grossly offensive message.

The arrest relates to sharing a graphic image from the scene of a fatal road traffic collision in Newry on 8 October.

The fatal collision happened in the Albert Basin area of the town, between the Quays Shopping Centre and the Buttercrane Shopping Centre.

A male pedestrian was struck by a lorry and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has since been named as 67-year-old man John O’Brien from nearby Warrenpoint.

At the time of the collision, the PSNI said it was aware of a “distressing image” being circulated from the scene of the fatality.

It called for the sharing of the graphic image to stop immediately out of consideration for O’Brien’s friends and family.

A PSNI spokesperson further noted that anyone found to be sharing the image may be committing an offence.

At the time of the collision, local Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins urged the public to “be mindful and respectful of the impact this incident will have on all involved, especially the family of the deceased gentleman”.

The woman arrested yesterday has since been released on bail, pending further police enquiries.
