Update: Athy shooting victim named as Jamie Lindsay

Gardaí in Kildare have launched a murder investigation.

Update: 5.18pm

THE 20-YEAR-OLD victim of last night’s shooting in Athy was found lying on a footpath in a housing estate in the town, according to gardaí.

Suffering from a number of gunshot wounds, he was taken by ambulance to Naas General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10.10pm. It is understood he was shot in the head.

He has been named as Dublin native Jamie Lindsay. He lived at an address at Coney Meadows, Coneyboro in Athy.

Gardaí in Kildare have now launched a full murder investigation. House-to-house enquiries have got underway.

The shooting occurred at Coney Green at about 8.40pm on Saturday. The scene has been preserved for technical examinations.

A port-mortem exam on the man’s body was conducted by deputy state pathologist Dr Michael Curtis. A family liaison officer has been appointed and relatives have been fully briefed by detectives.

An appeal for witnesses has been issued and gardaí would like to talk to anyone who say any suspicious activity in the Coneyboro area between 8pm and 9pm last night. Anyone with information is asked to contact Athy Garda Station on 059 8634210.
