FORMER US PRESIDENT Barack Obama has left Washington DC for a short vacation in California with his wife Michelle.

Before they left, Obama made a brief speech at Andrews Air Force Base just outside the capital.

In his remarks, Obama spoke about the importance of commitment and work.

“It was hope in the face of difficulties. It was hope in the face of uncertainty. You proved the power of hope,” he said.

The 55-year-old also spoke directly to the military men and women at the base and spoke about how they are the bedrock of their country.

“Our democracy is not the buildings. It’s not the monuments. It’s you,” Obama told them.

The former president is heading to Palm Springs, California to wind down after completing eight years in office.
