Do you prefer boxty or halloumi?

We weren’t even a full day into the EU presidency before an Irish stereotype was brought up.

YESTERDAY MARKED THE first day of Ireland’s EU presidency, which Cyprus had held since the start of the year.

And you might be wondering what that has to do with a poll about food.

Well, to mark the handover, the European Parliament wrote on Facebook: “Goodbye halloumi and welcome boxty! Starting 1 July, Ireland will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the next six months.”

If this is your first time hearing of either cuisine, halloumi is a Cypriot soft cheese which is traditionally made from goat’s and sheep’s milk.

Meanwhile, boxty is made from grated potatoes which are usually fried into a pancake-like shape. It would be mostly associated with western counties such as Leitrim and Sligo.

The two foods have very little in common other than representing their respective countries, but plenty of people have opinions on both.

So today we’re asking: Do you prefer boxty or halloumi?

Poll Results:

Boxty (1045)
Halloumi (532)
Can I have them both together? (513)
I haven't tried either of them (295)
I've only had one of them (215)
