Marriage equality

16 Irish celebrities who have pledged their support for same-sex marriage

Well-known Irish people have not been shy about getting involved.

AS THE REFERENDUM on same sex marriage approaches, the campaign on both sides is beginning to intensify.

Since the campaign began, many Irish celebrities have taken the time to speak out in favour of marriage equality with many lending their support to the likes of Straight Up For Equality and Yes Equality.

Here are some who have done just that.

1. Chris O’Dowd

The Moone Boy star declared his support for the Yes campaign early on, but has now made it Twitter official with his avatar.

2. Bressie

Bressie has been particularly outspoken on the issue, joining the Straight Up For Equality campaign and advocating for a yes vote.

He also spoke glowingly about Conor Cusack’s recent interview on The Saturday Night Show.

3. Brian O’Driscoll

The beloved rugby player/husband of Amy announced his intention to vote yes in the referendum with this simple four-word tweet.

Speaking of…

4. Amy Huberman

The actress/writer/sound gal was fairly unequivocal in her support.

5.  Dustin the Turkey

7. Glen Hansard

The Oscar-winning singer didn’t mince his words when it came to the issue.

8. PJ Gallagher

Gallagher recently lent his voice to the Straight Up For Equality campaign.

In fact, the comedian is a longtime supporter of efforts to legalise same sex marriage. Last February, he made a generous donation to Marriage Equality.

9. Hozier

Bray’s most famous export has implored his 304,000 fans to support the campaign on more than one occasion, reminding people to register to vote and participate in the campaign in the run up to the referendum.

(None of which should come as a surprise given that the video for Take Me To Church, was shot in response to the passage of anti-gay legislation in Russia.)

10. Donal Skehan

The TV chef confirmed to a follower that he would be voting yes on 22 May and has joined the Straight Up For Equality campaign.

11. Kodaline

The High Hopes singers recorded the above video message for Straight Up For Equality.

12. Angela Scanlon

The presenter/fashionista declared that voting against marriage equality would be “laughable”.

13. The Rubberbandits

They even reminded us forgetful folk to get out and register to vote.

And admonished those who left them once their stance on gay marriage was revealed.

14. George Hook

The Newstalk broadcaster/rugby pundit took a pro-marriage equality stance during a soapbox debate on The Late Late Show in 2013.

15. Aisling Bea

The award-winning comedian has added the marriage equality “twibbon” to her profile. (And here’s how you can, too.)

16. Colin Farrell

The actor spoke movingly about the importance of marriage equality on Claire Byrne Live back in January. He described his brother having to get married abroad as “grossly unfair” and called for a yes vote.

Ellen DeGeneres later shared Farrell’s speech, calling it “beautiful”.
