Chavez tells supporters "his return has begun"

The Venezuelan president appeared in public in his home country for the first time since his cancer battle was announced.

THE PRESIDENT OF Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has told his supporters that his recovery is going well.

He made the comments on return to his home country after a stay in Cuba where he underwent an operation to remove a cancerous tumour.

The 56-year-old president greeted the crowd in the capital, Caracas, yesterday. He said “the return has begun” and thanked people for their support.

He held up a crucifix during his speech and spoke about his “very difficult days” in Cuba.

He is now resting under medical supervision following the surgery.

There had been concerns about Chavez’s health after he had not been seen in public for a number of weeks.

However, last week he revealed that he had been receiving treatment for cancer in Cuba.
