CHOCOLATEY, NUTTY, SALTY, sweet – there is a brownie out there to suit everyone! One of my favourite things about brownies is that they are so easily customised. Ingredients you have in the house, from berries to nuts or white chocolate, can transform a basic brownie recipe into something extra special.
As with many culinary delights, sourcing the original creator of the chocolate brownie is complicated. There are many myths surrounding them, but a lot of stories trace back to Bertha Palmer, co-owner the Palmer Hotel in Chicago.
Palmer was tasked with creating a cake like treat that was easier to eat than a layer cake and could fit in a lunchbox, and that is where the fudgey, dense, chocolatey brownie was born!
From cake-y to fudge-y, the brownie now has many guises that often differ vastly from Palmer’s original, which was covered in walnuts and with an apricot glaze. The original recipe is still served today at the Palmer Hotel in Chicago, but if you can’t make it there, we’ve a list of brilliant brownie recipes below that you can make from home.
1. Chocolate Brownies with Sweet Potato Frosting, from Irish Baking Adventures: Avocado replaces the butter in this squidgy chocolate brownie recipe, adding some healthy fats as well as a nice velvety texture. The frosting is what really caught our eye here, made from mashed sweet potatoes and dark chocolate.
2. Chocolate Orange Brownies, from Country Life My Style: Flavour combinations don’t get much better than chocolate and orange, especially when there’s chocolate ganache in the mix! Heaven.
3. Dairy Free Chocolate Brownies, from Eva Burg: On a dairy free diet? No problem! As well as being very quick and simple to make, these brownies have some added protein from the chia seeds and contain absolutely no dairy.
4. Salted Caramel Brownies with Meringue Topping, from The Boy Who Bakes: A little more time is involved in making this epic-sounding recipe, but the end result will be worth it! After all, what sounds better than a salty caramel brownie coupled with sweet, gooey meringue?
5. Red Velvet Cheesecake Brownies, from Life, Love and Sugar: Like red velvet cake? You’ll love these red velvet cheesecake brownies! Delicious enjoyed on their own with a cuppa, or served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an ultra satisfying dessert.
6. Chocolate and Brazil Nut Brownies, from Sheerluxe: This is a slightly less sinful take on the classic brownie, made with spelt flour, nuts and antioxidant rich cacao. Serve with some marscarpone cream and we guarantee your guests will go nuts over these!
