Year in prison for man who attempted to smuggle 20,000 cigarettes

The man was charged with evasion duty of the ‘Marlboro Light’ cigarettes which had a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,706.

A MAN HAS been sentenced to a year in prison following the seizure of 20,000 cigarettes at Dublin Airport over four years ago.

Yaser Jaser Mohammed Abu-Khater appeared at the Circuit Criminal Court today where he was sentenced by Judge Martin Nolan to 12 months imprisonment following the seizure by Revenue’s Customs Service on 6 June, 2009.

The man was charged with evasion and attempted evasion of duty in respect of the ‘Marlboro Light’ cigarettes which had a total retail value of €7,992 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €6,706.
