FIVE MILLION SMUGGLED cigarettes that were hidden in six containers and labelled as ‘thermal storage tanks’ have been seized by Revenue officials in Wexford.
The cigarettes were discovered at Rosslare Europort and are estimated to have a retail value of almost €2.4 million.
The cigarettes were mostly ‘Minsk’ and ‘Winston’ brands and were detected when officers stopped and scanned a truck as it arrived on a ferry from Cherbourg, France.
They were hidden inside six separate containers and were described on the ship manifest as ‘thermal storage tanks’.
A Lithuanian national was interviewed by Revenue officials and investigations are ongoing.
