Ireland's largest offshore wind project off Wicklow coast will have '60 to 75' turbines

Codling Wind Park could begin construction in 2026 or 2027.

THE FINAL DESIGN of Ireland’s largest offshore wind project, which will be located off the Co Wicklow coast, is set to be revealed later today.

Codling Wind Park will have between 60 and 75 turbines, down from previous estimates of 100, and it is anticipated that the development will generate 1,300 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity, enough to power over one million homes.

The project, which will be located approximately 13km to 22km off the Co Wicklow coast between Greystones and Wicklow Town, is a joint venture between Fred Olsen Seawind and EDF Renewables.

When developed, Codling Wind Park will be Ireland’s largest offshore wind farm. The project is expected to create over 1,000 jobs in the construction phase and 75 new, long-term jobs associated with its proposed operations and maintenance base.

Subject to it receiving planning permission and all other necessary permits and consents being received, Codling Wind Park could begin construction in 2026 or 2027. Construction is expected to take two to three years to complete.

The new details about the project have been announced ahead of a third and final series of public engagements which will be taking place this month.

The engagements will include a number of exhibitions and dedicated information clinics in Wicklow Library, at a pop-up shop in Greystones and in Sandymount Community Centre.

The exhibitions and information clinics will provide members of the public as well as public representatives with further details on the design and layout as well details on the various onshore and offshore environmental, technical and feasibility surveys which have been carried out as part of the project.

The Codling Wind Park was one of four successful bidders in Ireland’s first auction for offshore wind contracts have been announced.

The other projects are: North Irish Sea Array and Dublin Array, which will both be off the Dublin coast, and Sceirde Rocks off the coast of Galway.

Someone said ‘Ireland has the potential to become the Saudi Arabia of wind energy’
If this is true, why are we importing all the bigger wind turbines needed for all the large scale projects like this one?
No Irish manufacturers of these type of turbines.
Why not incentivise Irish companies to start producing them?

P.S. I’m not talking about attracting yet another multinational like Siemens to Ireland to pay pittance tax- there’s enough of those here already.

@Staker Wallace: because vestas, siemens,ge etc have 40-50 years of R&d and production expertise, it would cost billions so no, no Irish manufactures of these types of wind mills…

@Trevor Mc Evoy: Very defeatist attitude. A lot of start-ups headhunt from bigger, established companies.
If you’re worried about infringing patents, turbines have been around for over a hundred years. They’re all variations on a theme.

@Roy Dowling: Did a little google. They built it for 100m (in the 60s) took 20 years to break even, the rest is all profit. EDF. Longest lasting energy source and was the biggest example for 40 years. Still going strong. I’m sure I’ve got some of that wrong lol. @Soundy Sound:Its not the dsta centres as much as the double standards around them. Domestic users are pilloried for their electrical usage and our supplies under threat at peak times, yet we bring in data centre’s which individually consume the power of a small town and get subsidised rates, which the domestic consumer pays for

@Soundy Sound: fairly sure I was able to comment on apps before the huge spike in data centres around the country, but please do lose your little mind over it. the hypocrisy of electrical conservation, climate change etc makes the topic laughable. The grid was so much in the red last winter ESB thought they were going to start losing power at different parts of the country. But at least we can comment on an app eh?

Why do projects like this take so long to get built in this country? I’ve been hearing about this since the 7 turbines were installed off Arklow and that was 20 years ago. If it was a good idea then why are we still waiting? Why can’t our top civil service officials/politicians make decisions quicker, they’re paid enough?

@The next small thing: Ireland is the land that time forgot. Try to do anything! By the time your done listening to people implement rules and the incessant ‘no’ that resounds around our greasy rocks, you’ll see that it’s actually us that move too slow. We’ve implemented a system to reflect that lack of ambition, and it’s working well in fairness.

The top ten biggest Carbon Emitters in the State published this week & Eamon won’t be pleased, as they don’t include the Farmers. This published information must surely be misinformation & the work of the Far Right as Eamon can’t have his beloved Aviation Industry on top of the list. What will himself & Catherine Martin do if they have to reduce their multiple Business Class flights, there is only so much Carbon Credits they can steal from the Farmers to cover it.

    Fake news alarm!

” The project IS expected to create over 1,000 jobs in the construction phase and 75 new, long-term jobs associated with its proposed operations and maintenance base.”

The project has reduced it’s size by 25% – 40%
The project WAS supposed to create 1,000 temporary jobs.
