File Pics Albert Reynolds Has Died

Tributes poured in for Albert Reynolds when his passing was announced on Thursday morning. Karen said:

Kate Ellen Egan added:

He was the last Irish politician who was his own man, didn’t come through in the dynastic manner and was a genuine family man . Newstalk have just done a nice commemoration RIP Albert ‘ar dheis Dè go raibh d’ainm dìlis’ ‘

And, finally, Brian Keelty said:

We have peace (for the better part) on this island because of the actions of this man… people are alive today because of his bravery and determination to stop the murders on both sides up north….. together with John Hume, David Irvine, David Trimbill and Seamus Mallon… They put aside their doubts and trusted in the other’s humanity…….. History will show him to be a great leader… and of course he has skeletons in the closet.. but his good outweighed his short comings.. R.I.P. Albert

While others questioned the eulogising of the good, while brushing over the bad.

Can we please have an unbiased review of his whole political career, the good and bad or do we brush over all of his controversies

That was a question posed by Philip. And we obliged here.

Some of our favourite comments

Reader Lorraine nominated two comments from people who lost loved ones to Motor Neurone Disease. The illness has been in the spotlight this week as people drench themselves in ice water to raise money for charity IMNDA.

The first was from Jennie Henderson who could not see why people were being negative about the initiative.

My mother only died of this on the 31st of July having been only diagnosed on the 14th Oct 13. This disease is so crippling not only for the patient but for their entire family. How our lives have changed since my mother was diagnosed and since her death life, will never be the same again. I dont care if people are getting sick of it in their newsfeeds etc etc, at least the world and social media are bringing this god awful disease to the forefront.

And another from Roland 303.

My mother died from MND several years ago. Those who post halfwit and condescending remarks have obviously never been touched by this disease. Who cares who does it and what their reasons are if in doing so they make a difference to people whose bodies are slowly shutting down. If it raises money for equipment and gives sufferers a much needed boost then it’s a good thing in my book. To those who don’t agree, take your negativity and shove it…..

This is just brilliant (read: so Irish) from Patricky.

When I was 16, I got a letter from a young one I shifted at Feile addressed to ‘Patrick with black hair who went to Feile & has an Irish setter, Some village near Cashel beginning with B, Tipperary’. There is no place to hide in this country.

Patricky, this author once got a letter delivered to her home address. The envelope said: Sinéad, Celbridge GAA.
