Cyclist and motorist killed in separate road collisions in Dublin and Roscommon

A male cyclist died in Dublin and a woman in her 90s died in Roscommon.

Updated at 4.20pm

TWO PEOPLE HAVE died following road collisions in both Dublin and Roscommon.

A woman in her 90s was found at 12.45pm in a car crashed in a deep ditch on the side of the road around three kilometres from Castleplunket in Roscommon.

There was no other vehicle involved in the crash.

She had been reported missing to gardaí yesterday when she failed to return home from an appointment.

Her body has been removed to University College Hospital Galway. A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

The road at the scene is closed to facilitate an examination of the area by garda forensic collision investigators.

Dublin crash

The incident happened at around 1.30pm on White Church Road in Rathfarnham.

The male cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His age remains unknown.

The driver of the truck was unharmed.

The cyclist’s body remains at the scene which has been sealed off to facilitate the garda forensic investigators.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Rathfarham Garda Station on 01 666 500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

RIP. That road is dangerous. It is way too tight for the traffic.

@WinSomeLoseSome: absolutely no reason for trucks to be on that road, barely enough room for cars to pass. Obviously SDCC still think having a strip of white paint, or making the road look like it’s 2′ wide for cars still works. Drivers need to be aware, but the council are fully responsible for all road designs, and any deaths caused by their ineptitude.

@Gulliver Foyle: While the council are responsible, the fact the golf club runs along one side of the road makes it difficult to realign the road.

Of course, a CPO could be made, and a few metres off the course could be taken, but I bet that doesn’t happen.

@WinSomeLoseSome: no golf course on that road. There was a much more dangerous road beside it years ago but land was bought from the golf club and the road was upgraded

@Ciarán Doyle: the whitechurch road, the road in the photo and highlighted in the article is still bordered by the golf club wall on one side and whitechuch cottages on the other. The road you are thinking is between st endas and the golf club. That is Taylor’s lane.

@WinSomeLoseSome: the collision happened on the road between Whitecliff and St Endas, not the part of the road in the photo above. Either way both roads are far too narrow and dangerous, and unfortunately a man has paid the price for the council’s lack of action with his life.

@Shay Ferris: that road should be aligned from saint endas, the golf club, and along Marley park. It is not suitable for the population of the area.

That road is far too small for trucks, it’s tight enough with two cars. Why do cyclists always collide with the vehicle? Do they go out of their way to do it? Have a think about that Hayley

RIP to both – Has any one ever been brought to task for the deplorable conditions on our roads. When there are spillages it is usually left to nature ie rain to clean them up.
Cyclists have to be so careful lots of bad drivers out there and I’m not referring to todays tragedy . I regularly see cyclists do crazy things and so many not wearing any protective clothing not even a helmet.
Every road user has to behave in a careful and considerate manner; better arrive a few minutes late rather than in a wooden box.

I’m not a cyclist but a motorist but I think at this stage that the Irish Government should ban HGVs from entering the City during certain times.
It’s crazy to see Artic trucks in the city and suburbs during business hours…..Stockholm only allows HGVs into the city & Suburbs during the hours of 10pm & 6am ….great system and reduces congestion & RTAs
