• The death toll for the Norwegian island of Utoya has been revised downwards to 68 from 86, after police said that the confusion of the situation had led to an incorrect figure being released. Meanwhile, another person has been confirmed dead following the bombing in Oslo, bringing the current revised death toll to 76.

• The State’s health watchdog has criticised the HSE’s Dublin north central foster care service, saying that children are being placed with “unassessed and unapproved” foster parents – some of whom have had allegations of ill-treatment filed against them.
• The Minister for Health Dr James Reilly is one of five people being sued over an alleged contract to buy a nursing home in Co Tipperary. It’s being claimed that Reilly and four others agreed to buy the facility 11 years ago but never followed through.
• Ireland’s newly appointed Chief Justice, Susan Denham, says the judiciary does not oppose a referendum allowing their pay to be cut. Denham today requested that her salary should not be increased on taking the office of Chief Justice, but that it remains the same – she would have been within her rights to receive a pay rise of €38,044.
• A Co Tipperary school has been told that it was within its rights to reject a local Traveller because his father was not a past pupil. The Christian Brothers High School had appealed an Equality Tribunal decision last year that it should offer 13-year-old John Stokes a place, saying that the rejection of the teenager did not constitute discrimination as 83 other children had also been rejected because their parents had not attended the school.
• Lisa McInerney writes today about the “sickly, complicated” relationship Ireland has with Catholicism, saying: “It’s completely wrong for Irish Catholics to demand the State be run to their spiritual stipulations.
• A North Korean minister is to travel to New York this week to meet with representatives from the United States ahead of a potential bid to resume anti-nuclear talks that have been stalled for three years.
• Two independent forensic experts testifying today at the murder trial of American student Amanda Knox told an Italian court that they believe some of the DNA evidence used in the original trial fell below international standards for evidence collection – may have been contaminated.
• Seven people, including three doctors, have been killed in an airstrike in western Libya. Residents say that NATO hit a hospital.
• Former trader Nick Leeson has written in TheJournal.ie today about his recent visit to Portugal; saying he found a country that will find it more difficult to recover than Ireland – and shows that Moody’s got our credit rating dive wrong.
• A post-mortem examination carried out today on the body of singer Amy Winehouse has revealed no cause of death, however the coroner’s office ruled that no suspicious circumstances surrounded her passing. Her family will now have to waiting for up to four weeks for the return of a toxicology report to confirm how she died. Winehouse’s funeral is likely to take place as early as tomorrow, in keeping with Jewish tradition.
