The Mazda CX-5 is wonderful to drive and its handling belies its size.

This particular model is fitted with the 2.2-litre SKYACTIVE turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, which is refined and smooth and quite punchy too with its 175hp output. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with four-wheel drive. The official combined economy figure is 5.5 litres/100km (51mpg).

Inside, the cabin looks tidy and unfussy with lots of nice soft-touch materials as well as more durable plastics in areas lower down near the floor. It has a nice touchscreen centre infotainment system that can also be operated with a rotary dial located near the handbrake.

There are plenty deep storage areas and large cupholders throughout the cabin as well as a good-sized glovebox. The boot holds a useful 503 litres with the seats up and a generous 1620 litres with the seats down.

There is plenty of leg- and headroom in the back and plenty of driver seat adjustment including electronic lumbar support as well as steering wheel rake and reach adjustment. So a comfortable ride for all.

It scored the full five stars in the EuroNCAP safety tests and comes with a whole suite of safety features and extras, including ISOFIX anchors for child seats, dynamic stability control (DSC), traction control system (TCS) and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS).

It falls into tax band C which means it is €390 to tax a year and it comes with a manufacturer warranty for added peace of mind.
