Dublin Bus drivers likely to go on strike next week

The company has confirmed it plans to implement cost-cutting changes from Sunday, despite opposition from unions.

DUBLIN BUS COULD be faced with an all out strike as early as next week as it confirmed today it will implement its cost-cutting measures this Sunday, despite opposition from unions.

In a statement, the company said it is “extremely disappointed” that all trade unions have rejected recommendations by the Labour Courts that would see cuts to overtime and sick leave.

Both SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union (NBRU) members voted for industrial action if the company decided to push forward with its plans. An overwhelming majority of SIPTU bus drivers voted for strike action in their ballot and a spokesperson told that the union will now consult with all members.

Union sources have indicated that strike action is likely and could start as early as next week with unions required to give the company seven days’ notice. A decision is expected to be announced early tomorrow as unions struggle to mobilise after the sudden announcement.

One source said they could not see drivers cooperating with any changes this Sunday and another said that should the company move forward with the cuts, members will definitely strike.

The company is seeking €11.7 million in savings each year, of which €7.7 million will come from direct payroll costs.  Dublin Bus said it had “no option but to proceed immediately” with its plans.
