Proposed visual of what College Green could look like. Dublin City Council

It's your last chance to have a say on the future of Dublin’s College Green

The project is described as a flagship project to ‘reimagine the historic centre of Dublin city, creating a new space that is a destination for everyone’.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL has reminded the public that consultation on the pre‑planning design for a pedestrianised College Green closes tomorrow.

The council last month published mock-ups for what College Green – which sits ahead of Trinity College – and Dame Street leading up to the junction with South Great George’s Street, are currently shaping up to look like once the area has been fully pedestrianised.

Titled “Grow College Green”, it’s described as a flagship project to “reimagine the historic centre of Dublin city, creating a new space that is a destination for everyone”.

Dublin City Council said the updated design has been shaped by an “extensive programme of community engagement” since August 2024.

This has included two rounds of public consultation of more than 2,800 submissions, with 86% of respondents showing strong support for the design.

The latest design has 75 new trees, 17,000 square metres of “improved public space for people, with a large civic space for people to gather and hold events, and wider footpaths everywhere”.

It also includes 1,400 square metres of landscaped areas, “with lots of planting, grass and public benches”, with areas for children and families to play.

The council and its partner in the project, the National Transport Authority, have yet to formally reveal any planned date for when the project will be completed, but it’s widely expected work will begin next year and be completed by 2030.

A spokesperson said, “Grow College Green is the flagship project to reimagine one of Dublin’s most historic and important civic spaces, transforming the area into a safer, greener and more accessible destination for everyone.

“The design sets out a vision for a high‑quality public realm that supports everyday activity, cultural events and social interaction, while also creating moments of calm within the heart of the city.

“The redesigned space will become a lively, pedestrian‑priority area, offering improved accessibility, clearer routes, enhanced planting, more shade and seating, and flexible areas for cultural activity and civic events.”

The full updated design, along with plans, visualisations and supporting materials, remains available to view until midnight tomorrow.

It has already received almost 1,000 submissions and people can submit their views before midnight tomorrow by online survey or in person, with a comment sheet at the consultation table, Atrium, Block 4, Floor 0, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

The council said that all submissions will be “carefully reviewed” and that feedback “will play a vital role in refining the design before it is finalised and submitted for planning permission”.
