A NEW SURVEY of office workers has shown that many Irish employees are not properly protecting their work data online with 17 per cent admitting to using the same password for work and personal use.

One in six respondents said they would give away their password for a €20 “One 4 All” voucher and 4 per cent said they would tell someone for a Mars bar.

62 per cent can access social media sites from work, such as Facebook and YouTube and two thirds said they would change their online behaviour if they were aware their employer was monitoring their activity.

Some 32 per cent are unaware if employers have policies in place to report lost or stolen mobile devices.

David Keating, security sales manager at DataSolutions said the survey was conducted because of previous research that found 80 per cent of Irish IT professionals were more concerned about the actions of careless employees than hackers.

“With 17 per cent of employees admitting to using the same password for work and personal activities they are potentially exposing the company to a number of cyber threats,” he said. “If we take for example, the LinkedIn security attack in 2012, where 6.5 million passwords were compromised, the potential risk of using the same password for personal and work activities becomes clear.”

The survey was commissioned by Irish IT distributor, DataSolutions in conjunction with RSA, The Security Division of EMC and was carried out by UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
