11.4 per cent: Eurozone unemployment reaches another record high

Unemployment throughout the European Union is 10.5 per cent – with 25.5 million people looking for work throughout the bloc.

UNEMPLOYMENT in the eurozone has continued to rise, reaching another all-time record, according to figures published today.

Figures compiled by Eurostat, the EU’s statistics agency, show unemployment in the 17-member euro area as having reached 11.4 per cent in August – the highest since the single currency was formed 13 years ago.

Unemployment in the EU as a whole is also up, having risen to 10.5 per cent.

The jobless figures in the eurozone are up by 1.2 per cent, and in the EU as a whole by 0.8 per cent, in the last twelve months.

Spain has the highest unemployment in either group, at 25.1 per cent, ahead of Greece on 24.4 per cent. Austria and Luxembourg have the lowest rates, at 4.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively.

The figures show 25.5 million people across the European Union are looking for work, of whom 18.2 million are in the eurozone.
