EVAN FERGUSON SCORED his first goal for Roma in a 3-1 win away to Cremonese that sends them two points clear at the top of Serie A.

Ferguson started on the bench having missed three weeks of action with an ankle injury, but was introduced on the hour mark. Ferguson netted within four minutes of his introduction, calmly finishing low in the bottom corner having been picked out in the penalty area by Neil El Aynaoui.

It is Ferguson’s first goal at club level in 13 months, and he today became the first Irish international to score in Serie A since Liam Brady scored for Inter against Torino in December 1985.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I’m glad to get it now and hope to get a few more,” Ferguson told DAZN Italia after full-time on Sunday.

“Of course, there have been lots of ups and downs, but hopefully I can get some good momentum after the injury, to start playing and get more goals.”

“We are all happy for Ferguson, as he had been waiting for this a long time, but it was also important because it doubled our lead,” said Roma manager Gioan Piero Gasperini.

“We had been playing well and with very good opportunities, so this goal made us realise we were on the right path to victory.”

Roma had only scored 12 times in their previous 11 league fixtures but were clinical in front of goal at the Stadio Giovanni Zini.

Soule fizzed in Roma’s opener in the 17th minute shortly after Cremonese forward Federico Bonazzoli had forced a fine save from Mile Sivlar.

And what had been a tight match was then decided by two quick strikes from Ferguson and Wesley, who finished off a lightning counter-attack by dinking a brilliant finish over Emil Audero.

In the middle of all that Roma centre-back Gianluca Mancini was spared from conceding a penalty near half-time after a VAR check chalked off his penalisation for handball.

And Gasperini, who was livid with the initial awarding of a penalty against Mancini, was sent off for more dissent shortly before Ferguson doubled Roma’s lead.

That means Gasperini will miss Roma’s huge clash with champions Napoli in Rome next weekend.

Francesco Folino netted a consolation goal in stoppage time for promoted Cremonese, who sit 12th after their four defeat of the season.

In the later game, Christian Pulisic fired AC Milan to derby victory with the only goal in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Inter Milan, moving his side up to second in Serie A and within two points of new leaders Roma.

USA forward Pulisic pounced for his fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute after Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer weakly palmed away Alexis Saelemaekers’ low shot, Milan’s only true opportunity of a tense encounter at a boisterous San Siro.

Pulisic has been excellent for Milan this season, with two assists to go with his league-leading goal tally.

But Milan also had Mike Maignan to thank for the three points as the France goalkeeper kept out Hakan Calhanoglu’s penalty in the 74th minute and tipped a Lautaro Martinez volley onto the post eight minutes before half-time.

Francesco Acerbi thumped a header onto the woodwork 10 minutes before as Inter dominated the play but couldn’t find their way past Maignan.

Inter sit fourth, a point behind Milan and champions Napoli, and narrowly above high-flying Bologna.

In Spain, Jude Bellingham struck late on to secure Real Madrid a 2-2 draw at Elche on Sunday, taking his team top of La Liga by a point.

Xabi Alonso’s side struggled against their mid-table opponents in an entertaining battle in which Madrid twice came from behind.

Aleix Febas fired the hosts ahead before Dean Huijsen levelled for the league leaders, with Bellingham stabbing home from close range after Alvaro Rodriguez blasted Elche back in front.

Second-place Barcelona had cut Madrid’s lead by two points over the weekend after they thrashed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 on Saturday in their first match back at Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid earned a fifth straight LaLiga win after edging to a 1-0 victory over Getafe.

Domingos Duarte’s own goal proved to be the difference for Diego Simeone’s side after the the Getafe defender flicked the ball into his own net with eight minutes of normal time to go. Atleti are now fourth in the league, trailing the aforementioned duo along with third-placed Villarreal.

In Germany, a blistering strike from teenage Germany midfielder Assan Ouedraogo helped RB Leipzig to a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday, sending them back up to second in the Bundesliga.

Austria international Xaver Schlager scored with 10 minutes remaining to cement the victory.

The win moved Leipzig two points clear of Bayer Leverkusen and to within six points of league leaders Bayern Munich.

And finally in France, veteran forward Olivier Giroud netted twice as Lille won 4-2 at home to Paris FC in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The 39-year-old struck in both halves after Willem Geubbels had given the visitors the lead.

Aissa Mandi headed a third and Lohann Doucet then gave Paris FC late hope, until Marius Broholm’s spot-kick sealed Lille’s place in the top four with 23 points.

Earlier, Lyon were held to a goalless stalemate at bottom-of-the-table Auxerre as the hosts put an end to a four-game losing streak in the league.

Lyon move to 21 points but lost further ground on Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille in the title race.

But things could have been worse for the seven-time Ligue 1 winners if goalkeeper Dominik Greif had not saved a first-half penalty from Lassine Sinayoko.
