THINGS WE LEARNED

#REFERENDUM Voting for the Children’s Referendum began at 9am today, and will continue until 10pm tonight. Early indications were that turnout was as low as 2 per cent at some polling stations. President Michael D Higgins and Minister Leo Varadkar were among those pictured casting their vote today.

#WATERFORD Thousands of people turned out in Waterford for a rally against the proposed downgrading of Waterford Regional Hospital to a county hospital. It is estimated that 12,000 people turned up, and the photos show the scale of the support for the rally.

#AOIFE PHELAN The family of murdered Aoife Phelan, who was buried at St Patrick’s Church in Ballyroan, Laois, today, have said they are “sad and heartbroken” over her death. The family thanked those who helped in searching for Aoife, and have asked for privacy.

#JOHN KERINS A post-mortem has concluded that former garda John Kerins died of gunshot wounds to the upper body, gardaí said today. Kerins’ body was found in a house near Bailieborough, Co Cavan, yesterday.

#APOLOGY The BBC has issued an unreserved apology to Lord McAlpine over a Newsnight report which led to him being wrongly implicated in the sexual abuse of children at north Wales care homes. As a result of the false report, Newsnight investigations have been put on an “immediate pause”.

THINGS WE LOVED

  • Had enough of lip dubs yet? If not, you’ll enjoy this. Here are the students and teachers from Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana, Co. Donegal with what they say is “one of the first whole school lip dubs in the Republic of Ireland”. Take it away, folks…

  • What were the greatest mysteries of the 1990s? According to Buzzfeed, they include: ‘Why did the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wear masks?’ and ‘Why was Kevin McAllister’s family so full of jerks?’.
  • This beautiful photo was sent in by reader Patrick  McCormack. He says it is of a sunset in the Bannow, County Wexford.

THINGS WE SHARED

  • This is morbid, but fascinating: death masks of some of the world’s most famous people, such as Leo Tolstoy, William Wordsworth and Beethoven. Retronaut has them all.
  • How do you make sure your passwords are safe online? This hugely popular New York Times article claims it can show you how to devise passwords that drive hackers away. Read the whole thing to find out more.
  • A reddit user set out to record a time-lapse of his home city, Montreal… and then something incredible (and dangerous) happened.
