AN ADDITIONAL TD will be eligible to vote in the Fianna Fáil leadership ballot later today after Jimmy Devins – TD for Sligo-North Leitrim - rejoined the parliamentary party last night.
Devins announced his intention not to run in the next general election earlier this month. He had resigned the party whip in August 2009 in protest to the removal of breast cancer screening and treatment services at Sligo General Hospital.
Now that Devins has a vote at the leadership contest, the total number of TDs to take part in today’s ballot stands at 72.
RTÉ reports that a supporter of Micheál Martin, the favourite to win, said that more than 40 TDs were likely to vote in favour of the Cork South Central TD.
