Five US soldiers killed in central Iraq

The deaths come despite US forces having disengaged from combat operations in the country last year.

FIVE AMERICAN TROOPS have been killed in central Iraq, according to the US military.

The military said in a brief statement that the five were killed on Monday. It gave no additional details about where the incident occurred or how the five died.

Reports indicate that a missile struck a military camp in Baghdad.

The military says the names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

The deaths raise to 4,459 the number of American service members who have died in Iraq. That’s according to an Associated Press count.

The US withdrew from combat operations in Iraq last August leaving around 50,000 troops in the country to provide assistance to Iraqi security forces.

At the time the Iraqi prime minister declared that his country was independent.

All US forces are supposed to have withdrawn from Iraq by the end of this year.
