Supervalu in Co Cork ordered to close twice in September over rodent activity

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) handed down five closure orders and five prohibition orders last month.

A SUPERVALU IN Co Cork was among the ten food businesses across the country who were issued with enforcement orders last month for breaches of food safety regulations.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) handed down five closure orders and five prohibition orders in total.

Supervalu in Hollyhill, Co Cork was closed twice in September due to the presence of rodents resulting in a “serious risk” of food being infected with bacteria.

On 4 September the premises was closed after an inspector found rodent droppings under the hot counter and bakery.

The inspector also found holes in the wall at the back of the hot counter.

The shop reopened and was closed again on 29 September when an inspector discovered rodent activity under the special offers refrigeration unit and found holes in the wall behind the sweet shelf on the shop floor.

The three food businesses served with closure order under the FSAI Act (1998) are:

  • SuperValu Hollyhill (Retailer), Hollyhill Shopping Centre, Hollyhill, Cork
  • Wok In Noodle Bar (Restaurant/ Café), 48-50 Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2
  • SuperValu Hollyhill (Retailer), Hollyhill Shopping Centre, Hollyhill, Cork

The two food businesses closed under the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020 were:

  • New Leaf (Closed activities: the preparation and sale of sushi and sashimi) (Take Away), 18 New Street, Skerries, Dublin
  • The MOMO House (ceased trading on 10/10/2025) (Take Away), East Ocean, 61 Port Road, Letterkenny, Donegal

Wok Inn Noodle bar on Stephen Street Lower, Dublin 2, was also closed due to the presence of rodents. Droppings were found by an inspector behind and beneath the seating booths.

Two Prohibition Orders were served under the FSAI Act 1998 on:

  • Food Business trading as Vitalorganico and website vitalorganico.ie operating at the domestic dwelling house (Wholesaler/ Distributor), Castleknock, Co. Dublin
  • Duud (Retailer), Pinewood House, Huntstown Road, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15

Finally, three prohibition orders were served under the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020 on:

  • Nearby Cashel (Retailer), 3 Main Street, Cashel, Tipperary
  • XL Convenience Store (Retailer), Main Street, Drumconrath, Navan, Meath
  • BK Foods Limited (Wholesaler/ Distributor), Clongorey, Newbridge, Kildare

A prohibition order was placed on all dry goods in BK Foods Limited, Newbridge, Co Kildare, after an inspector spotted a live rat in the warehouse, as well as rat droppings.

Six meat items which were past their use by dates were found in XL Convenience Store in Navan, Co Meath.
