THE GARDA OMBUDSMAN Fiosrú, is probing the circumstances of a Cork traffic incident in which a woman died.

The woman sustained critical injuries in a collision in Ballyellis, Mallow in Co Cork yesterday at 6pm. The woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her body was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where a postmortem will be carried out.

A garda spokesperson said the matter has been referred to Ireland’s police ombudsman.

Fiosrú received the referral yesterday from a garda superintendent under Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024.

“The referral was made following a fatal road incident during a Garda interaction in the County Cork Division.

“One of Fiosrú’s on-call team of investigators attended the scene. The team has and will continue to engage with the family concerned.”

The spokesperson said the matter is now under investigation, pursuant to Section 208(1)(b) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024, and Fiosrú could not comment further.
