George Bush Senior in intensive care after 'setbacks'

The 41st president of the United States has been in hospital since November, but his condition worsened over the past four days.

FORMER US PRESIDENT George HW Bush is in intensive care in a Texas hospital.

A spokesperson for the Bush family confirmed late last night that the 41st president of the United States had been moved to the intensive care unit of the Methodist Hospital in Houston after suffering ‘a series of setbacks’, including a persistent fever.

Bush has been in hospital since late November when he was admitted for treatment for bronchitis. He spent Christmas Day in the hospital with his family at his side.

The spokesperson said that the former president is in ‘guarded condition’ and has been placed on a liquid-only diet.

“Doctors at Methodist [Hospital] continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment,” said Jim McGrath, the  Bush family spokesperson.

The 88-year-old is alert and conversing with medical staff, McGrath said.

George HW Bush was elected as president in 1988 after serving two terms as Ronald  Reagan’s vice president. He was defeated by Bill Clinton in the 1992 presidential election.
