Meet the Shakespeares: Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley star in new film about playwright's life

The film is due to arrive in cinemas on 9 January 2026.

A TEASER TRAILER has been released for the film Hamnet, starring Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.

Billed as ‘The love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece ‘Hamlet”, the film is based on the 2020 novel of the same name, written by Irish author Maggie O’Farrell. O’Farrell also co-wrote the screenplay with the film’s director, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao.

The novel is a fictional account of William Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet, who died at age eleven in 1596, focusing on his parents’ grief, and the film claims to focus on the story of his wife Agnes as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her only son.

The film adaptation was announced in April 2023. It is now due to arrive in cinemas on 9 January 2026.

Paul Mescal takes on the role of the world’s most famed playwright, William Shakespeare, while Jessie Buckley assumes the role of his wife Agnes Shakespeare.

Other names include English actors Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson, and Irish actor David Wilmot, known for his roles in films such as Michael Collins, Anna Karenina, and Calm with Horses.

Legendary director Steven Spielberg is among the eight producers listed.
