Gary Hutch - The murder that sparked a year of bloodshed

Gary Hutch’s murder a year ago precipitated the deaths of others.

ONE YEAR AGO, there were reports that an Irishman had been killed in Spain.

As the news came out, it became clear that if the person wasn’t a household name in Ireland, his surname certainly was.

But beyond that, the murder of Gary Hutch in Miraflores sparked a year of bloodshed in Ireland and abroad.

Here is a timeline of the last year’s violence between the Hutch and Kinahan families:

24 September, 2015: Gary Hutch, a nephew of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch, is shot dead at an apartment complex in Miraflores, Spain.

9 October, 2015: Gary’s brother Derek, known as “Del Boy”, survives an attack in Mountjoy Prison.

11 December, 2015: “Del Boy” survives another brutal attack.

31 December, 2015: Gerry Hutch leaves a Lanzarote pub minutes before masked gunmen burst in to kill him.

5 February, 2016: Kinahan cartel member David Byrne is shot and killed while attending a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin.

8 February, 2016: Eddie Hutch, brother of Gerry, is shot and killed at his flat in Dublin’s North Strand.

23 March, 2016: Noel Duggan, an associate of The Monk, is shot and killed in his car outside his home in Ratoath, county Meath.

14 April, 2016: Innocent father-of-three Martin O’Rourke is killed when he is hit during an attempt on another man’s life. The target is a Hutch gang member.

25 April, 2016: Michael Barr, a 34-year-old dissident republican, is shot three times at the Sunset House pub in Summerhill in Dublin. It is believed he organised logistics for the Regency Hotel shooting. He dies instantly.

21 May, 2016: Hutch associate Keith Murtagh is grazed by a bullet fired in the window of a house in Cherry Orchard, Dublin. He signs himself out of hospital and refuses to engage with gardaí.

24 May, 2016: Gareth Hutch is shot in broad daylight at the Avalon House flats in Dublin’s north inner city.

19 June, 2016: Two men are arrested on their way to carry out a shooting in Dublin. They are believed to be associates of the Kinahan gang.

1 July, 2016: David “Dotty” Douglas is shot dead in Dublin’s south inner city.

17 August, 2016: An Irishman is shot dead in Costa De La Calma in Spain. It is later revealed that Trevor O’Neill is the victim of mistaken identity and that the intended target was Jonathan Hutch.

2 September, 2016: Gunmen attempt to kill Johnny Hutch outside his home in Dublin.

5 September, 2016: A man is arrested and charged in connection with the Regency Hotel shooting.

14 September, 2016: A joint Garda/Guardia Civil operation leads to the arrest of a man in connection with the murder of Gary Hutch. Gardaí also seize computers, cash and a boat.
