Irish exports see record results for 2010

Sales for Irish exports hit a record €161bn last year, according to the Irish Exporters Association.

2010 WAS A BUMPER YEAR for Irish exports, which rose to a record €161bn in sales for the year, RTÉ reports.

Although exports to eurozone countries (bar Germany) dropped in 2010, overall exports were up 6.7% on 2009. The manufacturing and agri-food sectors saw strong recovery in their exports last year.

The Irish Exporters Association said that the weaker euro could help to support the export industry into 2011.

Expoerts to the US and Canada grew by 18% and 27% respectively, while exports to Brazil, Russia, India and China grew by 12% and are expected to continue to grow.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times reports that the service sector in Ireland suffered from last month’s bad weather, with the NCB services Purchasing Manufacturing Index falling below 50 to 47.4 for services in December, indicating a contraction. The manufacturing sector was apparently not affected by December’s snowy spells, as its index rose from 51.2 for November to 52.2.
