Irish student found dead in Spanish city

Twenty-one year old Shane O’Connor died following a fall in the city of Zaragoza.

THE BODY OF a 21-year-old Irish student has been identified in a city in the north-east of Spain.

Shane O’Connor, an Erasmus student living in the city of Zaragoza, was found dead under a motorway bridge. It’s thought that he died from injuries sustained in a fall.

Local newspaper El Periodico de Aragon reports that Mr. O’Connor’s body was found near that of a 19-year-old Spanish student, who had been struck by several vehicles.

It’s not known if the two deaths are linked, but Spanish authorities say they believe there may be some connection. It’s thought that the Irish man may have fallen going to the other student’s aid.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs has told TheJournal.ie that Mr. O’Connor’s family were informed of his death by Gardaí last night, and that Gardaí and police authorities in Spain are assisting the family.

The Irish Embassy in Madrid will provide any necessary consular assistance.
