‘Proud Irishman’ killed outside London shop to be laid to rest in Kilkenny

The Irish-born pensioner was assaulted and robbed in north London while out buying food and a newspaper.

A KILKENNY MAN murdered during a trip to a food shop in London has been described by his family as a “proud Irishman”.

John Mackey (87) was attacked and robbed after visiting his local Co-op to buy food and a newspaper on Goodchild Road in Manor House, north London.

He was found unconscious and bleeding from a head injury shortly before 6pm on 6 May.

He was taken to hospital but died two days later.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, who is leading the investigation, said that John Mackey was “a proud Irishman” and “an innocent member of the public”.

He had been walking home after running errands when he became the victim of what police described as a “tragic incident”.

Originally from Callan, County Kilkenny, John Mackey moved to London in the 1950s. He was one of 11 children, and uncle to 22 nieces and nephews. He is survived by four siblings.

“They will all miss him,” a statement from UK police said.

“John’s family describe him as funny and charming. He was a life-long Arsenal fan, who was adored by his family and loved by his local community.

“His family will join John on one final trip back to Ireland, where he will be laid to rest.”

A man has been charged in connection with the fatal assault.

Peter Augustine (58), from north London, was charged on Friday, 10 May with murder and robbery. He is currently remanded in custody.
