A TWO-YEAR-OLD toddler had a lucky escape from a locked car in tremendous heat according to bystanders.
The incident, which happened in Merriam Kansas, was recorded by a local woman Kristy Scales. The video can be viewed here.
Another woman, Sarah Oropeza, saw the baby girl in the back of the car in 101 degrees Fahrenheit heat after being notified by a member of her staff.
She told local TV station KCTV5 that the child was “covered in sweat”.
“The windows were totally rolled up, all the doors were locked,” she said.
When I looked in the back window, she was covered in sweat. She had pulled her hair back and sweat was just dripping.
I’m screaming ‘There is a baby in the car! There is a baby in the car! Somebody help’.
Oropeza finally got the window to break after hitting it repeatedly with a tire iron.
Merriam police said that the child was “screaming and extremely sweaty” in a statement.
The couple who left the baby in the locked car have been charged with child endangerment it seems.
Officers spoke with two adults who were watching the child. They said the child was only alone for four minutes.
This case will be reviewed by the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office for charging through the district court.
