These new symbols will direct motorists when the M50 is closed after an accident

The symbols will be added to existing road signs and will direct people along the correct diversion.

EMERGENCY PLANNERS ARE planning a new system of road symbols that will guide motorists along diversions when there’s an accident on the M50.

The diversions will come into effect when there is a full closure of the motorway lasting for a number of hours.

The diversions will be along the non-motorway network and the Interagency Incident Coordination Group (IICG) says that they are designed to be the best available alternative to the M50 at a given time.

The symbols will be attached to existing road signage.

Motorists will be shown a sign informing them that the motorway is closed and told to follow a particular diversion route.

The routes will not completely alleviate the disruption caused by the motorway’s closure, but the IICG says that they have been developed to minimise delays.

A number of different diversion routes have been designed in the past couple of months and signage has been erected for the routes between the junctions 5 and 6 at the N2 and N3.

Each of the diversion routes will be allocated a different symbol and motorists will be told the diversion is active by LED signs.

Planners have released a number of possible symbols that will each correspond to a different diversion routes.

The IICG says that gardaí will also be present in some instances to direct motorists to the correct diversion route.
