EVER WANTED A say on how the press, including online news publications like ours, maintains journalistic standards?
There are three positions opening up on the Press Council of Ireland, and all must be filled by candidates who are outside the press industry.
One of the three positions is for Chairman (or -person) of the Press Council, a role that carried a great deal of responsibility in leading the Council on “sensitive issues” and supporting the Press Ombudsman on adjudicating on difficult decisions. The successful candidate will be expected to strike a delicate balance between upholding the freedom of the press while protecting citizen rights.
All three roles will be filled by candidates who “are free of any involvement in the press industry which could pose conflict of interest”.
The make-up of the Press Council is a mix of six people from within the media industry and seven from outside it. These three roles are to replace members from this latter independent majority.
Each member of the Press Council, including the Chair, serves a term of three years – and can only serve a maximum of two terms.
The closing date for applications is 5pm on 25 March 2016.
