Man remains in custody after shooting in Co Mayo

A man in his 40s remains in custody in Castlebar after yesterday’s shooting in which a woman was shot and injured.

A MAN IN his 40s remains in Garda custody in Castlebar this morning following a shooting yesterday evening in the County Mayo village of Balla.

The man was arrested in Claremorris yesterday evening following the shooting, which occurred in broad daylight at around 6:30pm. His victim, a woman in her 50s, was walking into the Costcutter shop on the village Main Street at the time.

The area was sealed off for a technical examination and Gardaí recovered what is believed to have been the firearm used in the attack.

The woman remains in a serious condition at Mayo General Hospital, but the Mayo News reported that her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The Sun said she had been named locally as Dympna Walsh, a mother of five, who worked at the shop.

The arrested man remains detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act. Gardaí have refused to speculate on his potential motive for the attack.

Gardaí are continuing to seek information from witnesses to the attack, and have appealed for any information to be given to Castlebar Garda Station at (094) 903 8200 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
