A FAN OF all things mathematical? Or still harbouring a fear of equations after grappling with them in school?

Next week is Maths Week, and from 11 – 19 October there will be a slew of events taking place around the country to make maths, well, a bit of craic.

They include the visit of popular ‘celeb’ mathematician and Fields Medal (that’s the maths equivalent of the Nobel Prize) winner Cédric Villani for a lecture at the RHA, a lecture on Salvador Dali at the National Gallery on 14 October, maths magic shows, a maths and rhythm show in Sligo and visits by the Maths Week Ireland team to Belfast and Mallow.

Eoin Gill, Maths Week Ireland Coordinator said:

“For many people, maths is considered to be quite intimidating. What people may not realise though is that maths is all around us. From totting up the weekly shop to watching our favourite sports teams score, there is an element of maths in everything we do. In addition people who are proficient at maths are very employable and our economy requires large numbers of highly numerate graduates.”

The week is coordinated by Calmast at Waterford Institute of Technology, and run as a partnership of over 50 public and private sector institutions and groups. It takes place all over the island of Ireland.
